He was very radical for his time, controversial ideas re political and theological ideas - think he wanted to start a commune. Became friends with Wordsworth but his increasing dependence on opium caused conflict in Wordsworth and they eventually parted ways.

Think that there was a thin line between dreamy beautiful poems/dreams and being so incoherent and dysfunctional that you can't string a sentence together.

Plus the dependence on opium left him crippled with constipation - became full of crap on ALL levels, it appears :-/
