For me Verdi was the gateway to opera as well.

I think I read somewhere that the Italians used this song as a protest song against the Austrian Emperor Francis when he visited Milan which was Austrian at that point in time. They drowned out the Austrian National Anthem with their singing.

What a fabulous protest song!
