Brit Pop Weekend - Part 1

Bk9X63_CMAAyGKQ

It is the 20th anniversary of Britpop bursting on to the scene. It brought the newest wave of new wave and saw the best of young British revert back to sixties and seventies guitar pop.  Back then, I was in my mid twenties and didn't see what all the fuss was about.  They ditched synths and went back to basics (or is it just me over simplifying things?).  Anyway fast forward to today and I do actually have rush of nostalgia over Pulp's Common People and The Verve's Bittersweet Symphony.  The rest, including Oasis, was bit of a non starter for me - though I really liked Damon Albarn and Blur.  That has carried on til present, as I am very fond of Damon's work with Gorillaz.

Anyway, this is the top ten as polled by Radio 1 listeners:

  1. Common People by Pulp

  2. Bittersweet Symphony by The Verve

  3. Don't Look Back in Anger by Oasis

  4. Wonderwall by Oasis

  5. Parklife by Blur

  6. Animal Nitrate by Suede

  7. Girls & Boys by Blur

  8. Slight Return by The Bluetones

  9. Disco 2000 by Pulp

  10. Girl From Mars by Ash

Bit surprised that Blur's Country House wasn't mentioned. I must rectify that :-D

did you see the Britpop programme on BBC4 last night? Damon did hid best cheeky grin and plenty of Suede and Pulp. Sadly no Strangelove, but you can't have everything.

No, I didn't. Following link right now. I have posted some Brit Pop stuff on the LJ schedule for tomorrow: Radiohead, some more Pulp, an Oasis one from 2005 and two from the Eels - Novocaine/Beautiful Freak (wanted to post Massive Attack and Portishead, even some Fatboy Slim and Chemical Bros - but this is Brit Pop, not nineties nostalgia, alas).

:-)

glad I could draw your attention to it, interesting who they chose to include in (Powder and Echobelly?) and who they ignored ( Mansun, Divine Comedy). I guess some of it comes down to who they had good performances for.

I must admit I vaguely remember Echobelly, but was far more of a Sneaker Pimps fan. Damn - another one to add to the list :-D

I think Sneaker Pimps were trip-hop not brit pop, but they're British and cool, so worth posting any time :-)

They are Trip Hop - I have reloaded a Nineties mix and have Portishead & Massive Attack ready for tomorrow :-)
