Booklist Summer 2014

As per the FdA Year 2 list

Arthur Conan-Doyle: The Lost World, The Poison World
Charles Dickens: Bleak House, Hard Times, Great Expectation - perhaps add The Old Curiosity Shop
George Eliot: Middlemarch
H.G.Wells: The Time Machine

As per my list

Monica Ali: Brick Lane
Margaret Attwood: Alias Grace, The Handmaid's Tale
Ray Bradbury: Fahrenheit 451
Bertolt Brecht: The Caucasian Chalk Circle
Jean Rhys: The Wide Sargasso Sea
John Wyndham: The Chrysalids, The Midwitch Cuckoos

I may add to this in due course - but I am looking forward to some creative time

The Jean Rhys one is an imagined prequel to Charlotte Bronte's 'Jane Eyre'. It centers around Bertha and her early years. The FdA ones are the ones on the list for the second year of my degree, the other ones piqued my interest as we read extracts from them in class. I read an extract from 'Alias Grace' last academic year and I really wanted to find out if Grace was a murder. I think I have to grab some James Joyce too - was meaning to read Ulysses and Portrait of an Artist as a Young Man.

I also need to reread some - read Dorian Gray twice, but I think it is coming up next year and Zadie Smith's White Teeth is another. Enjoyed it at the time, but it was years ago. My book list is endless - I was meant to read Steinbeck East of Eden and The Grapes of Wrath, but didn't get round to it. :-/
