This is a wasp's nest that is a staggering 3ft across, with approximately 5,000 wasps inside.  A woman had left her spare bedroom window open for a prolonged period of time, hence the size and density of the nest.  It took possibly three months to build and the wasps had digested much of the bedspread and mattress in order to make the nest.  The Hampshire pest control service said that it was the largest nest they had dealt with in nearly 45 years.

We have a small underground wasp nest about 10 foot from our property.  We have been led to believe that they will die off or vacate the nest sometime next month and they haven't caused any harm so we have left them alone.  Usually, they will become prone to swarming and therefore more of a nuisance when the pollen is low and the hive needs sugar to survive.  The wasp drones then die off and the queens hibernate. I don't really want to come home to find P2's bedroom window open and a shed load of wasps in situ.  He is freaked out by wasps, so maybe he will shut it without being asked countless times.

I think the photo looks like peanut halva :-)

The A and I were camping once and there was a ground wasp nest so I told the people. They called the Pompiers who came late dusk cos wasps had gone to bed. then they pumped gas stuff down... and started digging. THE HOLE was VAST... the nest had spread about five feet in any direction and was FULL of wasps. It was amazing and scaringly huge. I thought it was just a weeny hole! So - take care! and get it dug out if you can?

Eeek!! I might just wait till the coast is clear AND get the pest control in. I tend to not kill things if possible - I've been known to catch spiders, crows (two have come down the chimney, now capped), even pick up snails and get them out of harms way.
