The cat tower I ordered came. However the axiom states, “Whatever you want to do, you have to do something else first”. So before assembling it I had to move a chest of drawers and rearrange the wifi setup. That done, I laid out everything and started, redoing several misinterpretations of the instructions. It’s actually a little too tall so I didn’t add the last shelf. But I think it’s a success because a cat is lounging on the top shelf looking out the window. Before a cat had to stand and balance on the window sill to look out; now there’s lying down room. He may share with the other cat eventually. I’m pleased with the color of the shelves which is chocolate brown, not that usual dismal beige.

There were 7 cat toys found behind the dresser.

Always remember that if they had the money to bomb Iran, they had the money for universal healthcare, affordable housing, USAID, even egg subsidies if y'all* were so hell-bent on cheap eggs that you'd elect a fascist.

cut for some impolite thoughts )

* Not you, obviously. Or you wouldn't be reading my blog, which has beaten the "don't invade other countries" drum since the early 2000s when I started it.

There’s substantial rain here. Which is an adjustment for a former Califorian because it won’t usually rain again there until October. Can’t get over the mountains south. It means I don’t have to water the plants or pull any weeds today. The weeds will wait for me.

I’ve decided to watch my dvd collection instead of letting it just sit there. They’re arranged alphabetically so an Agatha Christie collection of stories was first. Filmed in the 1980s. I’m undecided whether to keep it or pass it on to the library. Otoh I’m over familiar with the stories, yet it’s filled with actors I like.

I’ve moved on to Agents of Shield. I never watched this much past the first season. It was so intense for me what with betrayals all around. But I love me some Coulson. And I forgot Ruth Negga is in it, So satisfying. I’m going to work my way through.

Acceptance. I wish I did have acceptance. And the ability to cross my legs like that still.

A full day today. After we dropped the baby bunny off near Saegertown we walked the Muddy Creek Holly boardwalk trail, then drove to Cambridge Springs and had a nice lunch on the patio at the Riverside Brewing Company.  We came home and I napped. Got up around 5 and we had leftover pizza for dinner. Then in the evening we drove to Oil City to pick up some firewood that Jordan's step father was giving her. Rossy and she want to use it for camping down at the creek this weekend.

On our way to lunch Dave wanted to stop at a garage sale. For most garage sales I stay in the car. I don't need ANYthing. But I made an exception today. I didn't need this little dish either but I liked it. It was made at the same place as all the little Red Rose Tea figurines were made - Wade Porcelain. I've always had an admiration for camels. Seemed like a nice b'day present for myself. I'm pleased.

Yesterday's Rainbow. No gold paint shines as well as the Winsor Newton gold ink does.

I was walking down back yesterday afternoon with Rainy and she found another baby rabbit. Damn. It wasn't in a nest. It was just lying on the ground in the open with tiny cuts on it and flies all over it. Brought it home and made a bed for it. This morning it's going strong and you can hardly see the marks from whatever attacked it and dragged it out onto the lawn yesterday.

Waiting to hear back from the wildlife rehab in Saegertown. I'd try to raise it myself if I had the right kind of food. I don't know if they can give me some of that or if they'll want to be the ones to raise it themselves.

They just called back and said to bring it in...

The other day I did an AI picture prompt with these words:
A beautiful summer day,
sitting in the woods,
thinking about life and death,
enjoying life while it's here,
at peace that it will be okay after I'm gone.

I like this picture they gave me and am thinking about how I can do a similar artwork today.

Today is my birthday. 72! Planning to have a good day. After we drop off the bunny, on the way home maybe Dave and I can have an adventure.

Listen this is the best episode of a podcast you'll listen to all week. Maybe ever. In this podcast lies the seed of all other podcasts.

The Aurora-nominated podcast Wizards & Spaceships episode "The Ur-Pisode: The Queer Heart of The Epic of Gilgamesh, ft. Julian Gunn" is about the Epic of Gilgamesh (obviously), why it still matters after 4000 years, and most importantly, why Tablet XII is canon despite what homophobic translators have done with it over the past century or so. It's so good you guys. It makes me happy every time I listen to it. [personal profile] radiantfracture is just one of the most brilliant people I know and hearing him geek out about this is a delight you won't want to miss.

I had the shrubs cut down. I had to call somebody which involved using the phone, my nemesis. I cold called a name from Next Door because I had bolloxed up the Thumbtack account I used before. It somehow involved the phone, my nemesis. (If I don’t use something every day I forget how it works.)

So after Diego left (after loading a cartload, a large cartload of greenery) a new neighbor came over to get the 411 (do people still say that?) on him. Because “her guy” quit. I learned a lot about him, where he lives, his new job and how much he likes it.. She needs somebody to do garden stuff, needs it bad but at a reasonable price. She took Diego’s card. There seems to have been an ice storm around here last year and it lives in people’s memories, any garden discussion brings it up. Something to look forward to.

Today there is construction or destruction going on just outside my back yard. It is loud and ongoing.

Taken during a walk to the lake last evening. The lake really is that green. Probably because of the fertilizer coming down from the field above. But it's pretty.

A misty evening. Our corner of PA is very saturated right now. Every step you take sinks into the soft ground a little bit.

I took my painting satchel down to the creek this afternoon and laid everything out on the picnic table. I'm happy that I have all I need and I can travel with it.

Clover Abstract. I came home and added Winsor and Newton gold ink to finish it.

I finished watching all the Love on the Spectrum shows on Monday. I wish it could go on and on. I loved seeing those people so much.

Reading Wednesday

Jun. 18th, 2025 06:47 am[personal profile] sabotabby
sabotabby: (books!)
Just finished: Service Model by Adrian Tchaikovsky. This one was really fun. I have three more Hugo nominees to read but so far this is on top. There's something weirdly quaint about it—it's a girl and her robot story, or rather, a robot and his girl story, these two absolute oddballs wandering a post-human wasteland on a quest for meaning, and I can read like a thousand stories with this concept and not get bored if the author pulls it off. Which I think Tchaikovsky does. IMO his stuff either floats your boat or it doesn't but I find him incredibly fun and humanist and this was a delight.

UpRising by Kelly Rose Pflug-Back (ed.). This is an ARC and I don't know when it's coming out, but when it does, you should read it. It's an anthology, mostly poetry, about mad pride/mad liberation and most of the writing is stunning. It's dark stuff—besides the mental illness, there's addiction, homelessness, police brutality, and so on—but written with unbridled passion and compassion. Interestingly enough, there's a story by A.G.A. Wilmot in it (the author of Withered, which I went on a big rant about last week). As with that book, the protagonist is asexual and has an eating disorder but there's nothing cozy about the story and it was actually one of the highlights for me.

How To Write a Fantasy Battle by Suzannah Rowntree. Another ARC, this is a short little book that is exactly what it says on the package. For reasons, this is pretty relevant to my interests right now, though it focuses more on medieval-style warfare than, say, urban guerrilla fighting but with wizards. That said, it is an accessible walk through the big concepts that apply to a number of different settings, using examples from the Crusades to the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Super useful, well-written, and even entertaining.

Currently reading: A Sorceress Comes To Call by T. Kingfisher. I just started this one. It's about a girl named Cordelia who grows up with a, shall we say overbearing?? mother. Who is able to make her "obedient"—basically paralyzed, mute, and silent at will. She's not allowed to close her door, and her only joy in life is riding her horse, which her mother approves of because it'll help her get a suitor. She befriends a girl in town who also likes riding. That's about as far as I've gotten. Very creepy so far, though, I'm intrigued.
