We had to watchthe new wave film Breathless and in its day, it has been heralded as “The Yardstick of Celluloid Cool.” Did they watch the same film as I did, because I found banal and pointless. Michel is a conman who steals and kills whatever gets in his way and tries to win the heart of his emotionally-detached love interest, Patricia en route. In its favour, it did have some stunning shots of the very photogenic Jean Seberg and the six pack of Jean-Paul Belmondo – but it didn’t have much else to recommend it. The Bogart tribute of lip rubbing, the never-extinguished cigarette and the prolonged death run – really bizarre.

I would have preferred to watch Ladri Di Biciclette, which at least looked like it had a story, or at least a point. I think we got as far as watching the bed linen being hocked for a bicycle, which ends up getting nicked.
