It appears that I can't get Student Finance to fund an MA English and Culture, because of my age - hello? You are shoving the pensionable age upward, yet put out to grass at an increasingly younger age (30 is their cut off point it appears).

Politics - Bah!!!

Well, that sort of sucks. How will this effect you? Will you have to stop?

I can finish my degree, but not take a Masters inthe same subject.

Actually, I feel like I have to change direction and strangely, I feel ok with that for now. I just think I want to have some careers advice from the Uni, that's all. need to network a bit and see if I can get my foot through a crucial door somewhere.

If it's something you want, that's cool. Good luck!

I'm thick, but tell me, if you finish your degree... why on EARTH can't it be the Master's Degree... what the hell are they doing with it. A BA is a BA and an MA is an MA... and a degree has to be one of them doesn't it?

What is so extra that they can't WON'T give you the MA bit? I just do not understand what goes on in the UK at all.

Here is the following criteria

GCSE (used to be O levels) - Level 2

A/AS levels; Access to Higher Education - Level 3

HNC/HND (combined); Foundation degree (FdA)/FdSc) - Levels 4 & 5

BA/BSc (top up, to follow from FdA) - Level 6

MA/MSc - Level 7

PhD - Level 8 and upward.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The MA is only one year, with 3 modules and another 15,000 - 20,000 word Major dissertation. The price is £5,000 plus, which is cheaper than a years funding at BA. I obviously need a 2:1 or higher to qualify, but it's only a year - I would totally understand if I was whining re funding for a doctorate.

Huh... considering it is YOU that is doing practically ALL the work, I just wonder sometimes where $5k plus disappears to? Profs must be well paid or something. Cos blackboard chalk doesn't cost that much. Another Govt. ripoff I spose. I got to the Uni entry level with my Schools Certificate with 6 Credits and two Distinctions out of 9 subjects. teehee. but they were charging for the Degree and I didn't somehow qualify.

Dammit. I wish you could get up and put MA after your name. Is there any hope you can haha get a job with your lesser Degree and then in a coupla years do a sabbatical and take the MA later? You'd be so used to working by then it would be a walkover.

This is so sad for you. I was thinking how grand it would be to be able to say ROSIE... MA Eng.Lit. meeeeeeep!

I think it is the government - the lecturers are cool, work hard. Now Rosie B: MA English & Culture would be great; yet it is still great to have BA English after my name :-)

Yes that would be nice... you'd have to get address stickers with it on. I tell you tho, writing out degrees and qualifications after one's name gets boooooring! teehee cosI have dozens I gained when I was nursing..as well as SRN... I seemed to do all the courses there were to do!

BUT can you still not try for the MA after you've got your BA Eng. and have had a job (well paying as Head Teacher of a smallish decent school would be nice!) and then you could afford that last year? The arrows SHOULD be allowed to hit that target you aimed for!!! MA Eng.!!! (How do you abbreviate 'English & Culture'? MA Eng&Cult? Eng & C.... E&C... (no that could be Estonian and Cornish.) teehee. XXXXX
