The results are back and many people are very unhappy.  The student's forum lit up and many are in tears.   I too, was heartbroken and just bawled my eyes out.  Yes, I have passed - but so low.  How can someone who is cruising near a first tumble to the bottom of the seconds? These marks are seriously screwing my averages.  At least 2 have only got 40% which is just a pass - another asked me to call her and told me to buck up and breathe a sigh of relief that I passed (which actually I appreciate - even if she was drunk).

I am so glad I took the decision to do this over 2 years.  Right now, I am in bed nursing my ego and a bottle of scotch a hot water bottle. Hate this bloody year :'((((

Yuck! Something is seriously wrong with the professor when grades come out like that.

There are so many that are struggling - I wonder how we are all getting such low marks? I am not the only high achiever who is crashing and burning at the moment. What is it that they are not conveying to us?

I have passed

I do not understand the grading system in your country-from what I have gathered is that one can not go on to advance degrees if they do not have certain grades-like if you wanted to get a Ph.D. you pass or advance to a certain level-please explain-glad you passed-peace

Yes it is a bit strange. The grades are on each essay and are thus

First - 70% +
2:1 - 60 - 69%
2:2 - 50 - 59%
Third - 40 - 49%

The essay marks are added together and the mean averages decide the final degree classification.

To do a MA or Ph.D, you need a BA first or 2:1. If you have a 2:2, there is a possibility that you can do an MA, but the process is very selective. For my foundation degree (two years of a degree), I had 69.54% - so I got a 2:1 with distinction.

Suffice to say that my final year has become problematic, plus I have been unwell for most of it. I have now been allowed to do the last year over two years because of my distance and health issues.

When our oldest son was working on his Masters Degree in Political Philosophy he was invited to a full Ph.D. scholarship for five years at two colleges-he chose Boston College Mass. to work on a Ph.D. degree-after five years at Boston (before going to Boston College to work at a Ph.D. he attended Michigan State for five years studying Political Philosophy with a Minor in Middle Eastern Studies)-after ten years of intense study he decided not to do his Ph.D. thesis and just get a Masters Degree-he decided after all those years he did not want to go into the academic world-right now he has a very good job which is too complex for me to describe-he is paid well for what he does-we always told our three kids to get all the education you can-I have a Bachelors Degree in Christian Education and Missions and a Masters in Theology and Church History-totally worthless unless you go into the Gospel Minister-all our children married highly educated people-it is a blessing to be educated-to keep learning and growing intellectually & spiritually-sorry to read about your bad health-peace

Thank you for your kind words, Jonny. I have really appreciated the support I have had returning to higher education as a mature student. I was pretty well-read before I came back, but a lot of the work has given me such a development of mind and I have thoroughly enjoyed reading and discussing well-written prose.

The health thing seemingly is IBS - I developed lactose intolerance in August and the list of no-no foods is getting longer. They don't think it is anything too serious, but I am having a full exploratory just in case :-)

Firstly that is a TREMENDOUS pic. SOOOOO telling! Oh deary me, it is so TRUE!

Ahem, wipes eyes - they're a bit dewy.

OH LOVE... can't quite figure out that by ' At least 2 have only got 40% ...' means that two of your papers only got 40%? Or that two others only managed that? Whatever, it IS a pass, and with the year you've had love, I'm jolly glad it IS a pass, whatever! You live to fight another year! And bawling your head off - (eyes out) is a good thing, cos it does relieve the horrible inside pressure (like a pressure cooker with the damn release knob stuck down!) You howl your head off... good for you. Lotsa sobs and hiccups and... sniffings. and then you'll pick yourself up, feeling slightly embarrassed at making a silly ape of yourself... and LIFE WILL BE GOOD AGAIN!

BUT YOU PASSED!!! so next year you'll be all bright-eyed and bushy-tailed, KNOWING the secrets have been shown to you this year by you stumbling along and only tripping over the 'revelations'! It's like tying shoelaces, the first time is damned difficult, the second, easy peasy! (sort of!)

You just forget all this nonsense now, and go ahead and have a lovely lovely holiday time. Go walkies and throw stones in the sea, and watch the sun go down .. its nice and early so you can then go home to supper!

I'm having the most tremendous argument with Amazon about the ebook... I'm sorting those bastuds.... 'THERE WILL BE BLUD AND SLAYING' if they don't come up with it before Xmas!

Prodigal 2 was most supportive - he has had a few female friends in the last year of uni, who have had similar experiences and they have got through the wall eventually.
