Is simplicity best Or simply the easiest? The narrowest path Is always the holiest So walk on barefoot for me Suffer some misery If you want my love If you want my love
Isn't he? I often see old photos of the Mode and wonder if they could imagine the road they would travel, with Dave particularly, the drug overdose, the spiritual quest, the movement from electronic to real instruments...such an unexpected journey.
Yes - I think Dave's blip in the early nineties is that he wanted to leave pop behind and reinvent himself as a Trent Reznor/Rob Zombie wannabe - and all that entails. Thinking of all the eighties bands, it's good to see they remained popular throughout the nineties - something that the likes of Spandau Ballet, Haircut 100, Nik Kershaw didn't make it past the end of the decade. Even Duran Duran suffered - the Mode hit it really big in America hence their prominence there til the late nineties.
When Dave OD'ed, I was quite shocked - very "don't die Dave, you dickhead!" but hoped he would pull through. Seems to be on a much happier path now.
They went on tour in 2015 and I missed out as I was sitting my ACCESS exam. My lecturer at the time (who was a couple of years older than me) said that she couldn't see the attraction. Quote she - "Weren't they a bit 'frilly'?"
Frilly ....well, Martin was a bit like that (sometimes he still looks like he has raided his Aunty Ada's jewellery box for a bit of costume bling), but Dave? Lovely in leather, brooding, dark with-a-cute-ass Dave? Now he may break out the eyeliner and dye his roots, but frilly? Non.
I defend Martin's right to be frilly and an Uncle Perv as Smash Hits have described the band, with enthusiasm. I feel that IAMX's Chris Corner took inspiration from his decision to wear questionable clothes and make up even though the rest of the band were more Essex nightclub.
I can see why it touched a nerve, she must have been thinking of someone else.
You will always get makeup and cross dressing in pop - it is almost de rigueur. I suppose if people aren't fans, then they might've not realised the more 'Grunge-meets-The-Velvet-Underground'stage.
I think it was the inflection on the adjective that made me bristle. Like the Tories mentioning the poor, or the vulgarity of discussing money.

Not that it touched a nerve or anything...

Oui, certainement - one does NOT diss the Mode.
