I have my Othello/Tabloid piece back and again, the rough draft is only 3% outside a first, so I am definitely getting better at writing my assignments.  The downside is, the essays took a long time to do before - now they are taking even longer.  This one took four days to  design and then the commentary of 1,000 words; the 1984 one took a staggering week to do - because I had to fit it in among other projects.  This weekend is about wring a child's story, so it looks like I will be story-boarding once more.

At the moment I am feeling a little down as it is the ninth anniversary of finding my father dead.  Difficult feelings - far more than my mother passing 5 weeks later.  Thankfully, I have got through the day without too much trouble. Just darkened times - not a licence to wallow, more of a time to be a little more gentle on myself.

Brabantio Bust Up Over Desdemona's Defiance

No - I haven't written that, but thank the stars above, the tabloid sheet has been done.  I have to whistle up a commentary document of 1,000 words (plus 10 % = 1,150 max) as to how I managed to do it.  Most of it was farting about rejigging the whole template and finding pix from the Branagh version.  That and hearing my soul fizzling into nothingness whilst creating a seriously sexist lexis used by all three main tabloids.  Onward with the commentary doc.

Sometimes it is harder to write about what you did.  I have to qualify everything I did, including titles, fonts, choice of lexis, phonology, direct quotes etc.  I have gutted out the essay plan, which has swallowed up 609 words already.  Tomorrow, I am having my foot xrayed and if the colour printer doesn't work, I will have to shoot off to the almer mater college to print it off in the library. I am going to have to be awake early and finish late to do this.

Today is the Othello/Tabloid assignment.  I haven't read a red-topped newspaper for a very long time.  I have got The Mirror, The Sun and The Daily Star in front of me.  I want to weep on behalf of the human race.  I know the kind of market and I saw more 'Pap's Baps', than is healthy on a Thursday afternoon (as usual page three and the usual lurid stuff), but also Rihanna wearing postage stamps on her chest, but granny knickers ala Bridget Jones. Strange girl.  I try not to be snobby about it, but the whole lot just makes me cringe.

There seems to be a huge celebrity market and not a lot of news at all.  I am not interested in soap operas and light entertainment, therefore I am lost in this strange quagmire of celeb-feed, boobs and low-register scorn on low-brow topics. Task set as follows:

Othello/Tabloid )

Right now, I am at the 'scrabbling around for ideas' stage.  It's going to be about the interracial marriage, the kiss-and-tell of Iago etc., but I must admit to dragging my feet (again) on this one.
