At the moment, I feel that I am trying to take a crash course in learning the POMO jargon.  I HAVE wondered if not knowing clearly about signs and semiotics is down to something I have significantly missed between my ACCESS course and my FdA English; stuff other students may have learnt, but was not part of the ACCES syllabus. Nobody’s fault, just somehow I have slipped through the net of understanding.

I am attempting the NT2 essay, but before I do that I have to work backwards a little.  I understand a little of it now – mostly about the nature of structualism.

Modernism vs Postmodernism
Modernism Postmodernism
romanticism/symbolism paraphysics/Dadaism
form (conjunctive, closed) antiform (disjunctive, open)
purpose play
design chance
hierarchy anarchy
mastery/logos exhaustion/silence
art object/finished work/logos process/performance/antithesis
centering absence
genre/boundary text/intertext
semantics rhetoric
metaphor metonymy
root/depth rhizome/surface
signified signifier
narrative/grande histoire anti-narrative/petite histoire
genital/phallic polymorphous/androgynous
paranoia schizophrenia
origin/cause difference-difference/trace
God the Father The Holy Ghost
determinacy interdeterminacy
transcendence immanence

Plus understand the works of Jacques Derrida et al.  Busy Busy Busy.

Teehee. Deconstructing philosophy at 9 am on a Saturday! Oh my, thank goodness for Google.

I've had a super morning reading about Derrida... who depresses me no END, but I do see what he was getting at. He seems to be such an aggressive pessimist, always looked at the black side. I wonder if that was part of his ejections from schools?

I did do deconstructings! I remember doing a precis of what The labour PM Wilson's speech once... took it down in shorthand for my speed practice, and then decided to find out what he actually said, and MEANT, and I 'deconstructed' it so much I found he'd said.... nothing! Quite shook me up it did. I'd HATE to do a modern politician's speechings.

But the Modern/post modernisms were interesting, had to get brain in gear to balance one with t'other. Still can't get the God and Holy Ghost 'non'-connection tho.

And did you know I'd never have learnt this even if I'd done philosphy at school (which natch, I didn't)... cos 'deconstruction' as a word first appeared in l973!!! teehee.

Now I'm giggling cos I look at bed, and see 'Signfied' and am become 'signifier' MUST MAKE IT!!

Bless you, I'm having such fun with opening my mind on your blogs. Never been there, never done that!!!! HUGS like MAD !!!!

Thank you Looloo, if it wasn't in my own interest then I would gloss over most of it - as it is, I am rather glazed over with it (however I am rather taking a crash course in it).

I have an LJ sticky post, which keeps all of the links in one place - I will take the 'privacy' option off so you can take a look at other stuff (if you like, of course - no obligation).

I'd like to try it... don't know what 'sticky posts' are..so that will be useful to find out, and what I shall find IN it... can't promise a highly intellectual bunch of comments!!! teehee. thicko me.. like Thor!

Hugs...

Click onto my journal and you will see that it is the immovable entry at the top of the page (when you post, you have the option to make it a 'sticky' post. Many use it as an extension to their profile - I use it for whatever topic I am on academically).

This particular sticky post is the Magritte picture - 'This Is Not A Pipe' and the post-modern links are below it :-)

Good luck Looloo - it just gives me a blinding headache (not a good start for someone who is going to begin her assignment tomorrow).

I quite liked learning about all these ideas, but I think it's ultimately a dead end, I mean it's okay to consider it, but where does it actually get us? Hope you get through it soon.

I feel the same - there is a sense of 'so what?' about it, but it is interesting to see how we have constructed inner universes in accordance to what we have been told, or influenced by. I suppose postmodernism challenges it, so we can reevaluate as to what we perceive ourselves to be.

Like you, I do think it is a bit pointless.
