Perhaps to ally the symptoms we need a Derridian "Deconstruction of Self"

I could've done with this when I was doing postmodernism last academic year, but still - it is a book app which works only with Apple products (a shame really - I will consider getting an iPad when I have left Uni). A story with many possible outcomes.

Yesterday
"I think you are an intelligent woman.  I just think that you have got a bad case of 'Emporer's New Clothes.' You are afraid of it, so you think you cannot do it. You think tht it is bigger than what it is, but it is the same as the other theories.  You will pass with what you have got, Rosie, but it won't be up to your usual standard."

Hence the last bid attempt via slash and burn editing, resignposting etc. The Emperor's New PoMo....

*sigh*

I know I have spent an inordinately LONG time on PoMo, but it appears that I need to spend yet more time on it. The plus side is that I was indeed in the right ballpark when my assignment was starting to sound like a Marxist rant about who directly controls information. Turns out this is EXACTLY the stance I should be taking. At its present state,I will pass this module, but not to my usual standard. I really don't want to take too much of a nosedive on marks. Right now, most of my marks hover around an upper second, the occasional one has hit a cherished first.

Not exactly back to the drawing board, but I will have to substantially rewrite this, starting tomorrow.

It appears that the main lecturer liked both my assignment on Tim Burton and REALLY liked my script of 'The Tell Tale Heart.' That assignment feels like years ago, but I am glad to get the heads up on that.

Right now, I am shattered. Slept three hours this afternoon and have been back to bed for over an hour. Early night.

Regardless of the state it is in, I will be having advice from my main lecturer tomorrow. It's mostly done, but really I will have to proofread and restructure it, so I won't spend my time with her cringing over my meagre efforts.  It has gone from PoMo to Marxist via Post Colonial theory, so it has gone on a bit of a 'Lit Crit' walkabout.  The thing is, how can I write about literature and communication without ranting about who controls information and their dumbing down of the human race en route to the bank.

On the plus side, P2 is enjoying himself on Scilly and has ordered me a pair of Converses in navy blue, to spur me to lose weight. I guess I will be back on a diet pretty shortly

:-)

22:48
Word count: 2,233. I have done as much as I can before taking advice. Right now, I am REALLY done with Postmodernism.  I am hoping that I don't have to totally go back to the drawing board, but at least the structure is there (how very Un-PoMo is that?).

If I am not done by Sunday evening, or quit moaning by Monday morning - then I will be done with PM.  My only comfort is that my fellow classmates are in the same boat and are cursing about the exact same stuff that I am whinging about.  Hubby is out with a mate down from London and I am not taking any calls.  Right now, it is just me and Classic FM (currently playing)

Let's get back to business.

17:13
So bored.  Have weeded the patio, text some friends etc - but what I should ve doing is editing this damn text. C'mon - get to it!!!!!

23:45
I stopped work nearly 2 hours ago. I think that I am about 80% done. Tomorrow, I will print off the finished piece and extensively proofread. I aware that I will still have to signpost it better and keep the PoMo question in the forefront.

An Oak Tree - Allegedly )

A Postmodern idea.....

Perhaps I will hand in a bottle of mineral water, a sandwich and a piece of cake and claim it to be my Postmodern assignment, my mini diss and my creative writing portfolio.

Just a thought.....

Because of my husband's ongoing treatment, I have been granted 14 extra days for extenuating circumstances and will be able to get the whole of my coursework out.  THAT will take the strain off a bit - thank you college and staff. 2,482 words done.  Now I have a lot of hacking and rewriting to do, on what will be my 4th draft.  Get the whole of this done by the weekend and I will be one happy bunny.

Back to study :-)

22:11
OK - have got hold of more useful quotes, mostly from Lyotard and some from Baudrillard - even good old Nietzche and McLuhan get a look-in.  However, Derrida does my head in - there is no academic way of saying that. When you start to see the words 'centre', 'structure', 'destructure' repeated again and again - in fact multiple times within a paragraph, you are in danger of losing yourself down the rabbit hole that is Postmodernism.  Pass me the sick bag, Alice (with apologies to Sir John Junor).

You've Heard It All Before )
I am in the 2,100 region, but I have a LOT of sorting to do.  Tomorrow, I will be totally on my own.  Hubby is having a few hours work at establishments with comfy seating - all are mindful of his recent op, therefore he will be spoiled. I need to get my act together and sort something out.  Then I am back to Bluebeard for the very last time.

Such a long, long road. Such a lonely one, too.

I think I have broken through that bloody wall called Postmodernism.  Not a lot of typing but a LOT of cutting and editing.  looking a lot better, but still a way to go.  Managed to do this via IAMX (a natural progression from Sneakerpimps, I feel).

It is 10:30 and I am in bed, with dread gnawing at the back of my mind. I'm really not getting to grips with Postmodernism. Or, rather I can understand it in art, architecture and just about every other medium, bar literature and communication, especially re media and the internet. Thankfully, I qualify for the extenuating circumstances form, but I have to resign myself to getting a low mark. AND I have to do my ILS/IAS work.

I am both exasperated and bloody exhausted with a time limit running on it. Nothing is falling into place as yet and my very real fear is that it won't ever get a grasp of it before the deadline. Plus, I still have to get to grips with the PoMo jargon etc.

I got 'The Fear.'

Out of anything I have done on this course, I think this part of the New Tech module is the part that sucks.  Even with the Romantics, there is a framework to follow i.e. the sublime, the pure spirit of children, the altered state etc. Because of the changable nature of Postmodernism, you cannot clinch some of it, because just as soon as you think you KNOW what you are talking about, the bloody pattern shifts.
Bowdlerised Definition )
So, how can you write a concise academic essay on it? It would have made better sense to have a Modernist module, THEN through the rule book out and study Postmodernist.

*sigh*

Back to the drawing board.

20:43
1,843 - there are better links on the FB forum thanks to our lecturer, but at this moment, I am done.  Make that SERIOUSLY done.
changeling67: (Default)
Here I go again, down the vast rabbit hole of Postmodernism, where everything is challenged and nothing is certain blah, blah, blah. I won't start from absolute scratch, but I have a fair bit of research to do. I know I will score pretty low on this assignment, but Ihave the entire 3rd year to pick things up. Think I need to restructure a bit (how very un-Postmodern of me)  - a fellow class mate has said that she will write every sixth word/verb in Arabic and submit it.  It would most certainly contribute to the PoMo notion of randomness (or maybe not as it is every sixth word and therefore the text is still predictable).

Ha! Can't wait to get rid of this bloody module.

17:10
1,552 - so about 600 words up from the beginning of the day. Still a LOT of sorting out to do.
changeling67: (Default)

Today sucked - our phone line is playing up again and I either have intermittent or nada internet. Pain in the ass, as reading Baudrillard or McLuhan pdf files online requires me To. Be. On. Line. If I printed the lot off, I would've sacrificed a chunk of the Amazon rain forrest. Talking of Amazon, I have had to order said books from said warehouse, so I can quote chapter and verse without TalkTalk pulling the plug.

Saying than, I have typed 1,000 words today - because of the cockups, I stopped writing one assignment and started on the Anna Barbauld one.  Still feel like there has been little progress.
changeling67: (Default)

I must admit this gave me a headache. Then again, so did the Derrida recording. And the Lyotard lectures.
changeling67: (Default)

At the moment, I feel that I am trying to take a crash course in learning the POMO jargon.  I HAVE wondered if not knowing clearly about signs and semiotics is down to something I have significantly missed between my ACCESS course and my FdA English; stuff other students may have learnt, but was not part of the ACCES syllabus. Nobody’s fault, just somehow I have slipped through the net of understanding.

I am attempting the NT2 essay, but before I do that I have to work backwards a little.  I understand a little of it now – mostly about the nature of structualism.

Modernism & Post-Modernism )

Plus understand the works of Jacques Derrida et al.  Busy Busy Busy.

It is about now that I start to flap, because everything else I need to do is comparatively straight forward. I have attended few lectures because of circumstances aleady discussed, so I have been emailed a LOT of links and PP's to get the gist.  Can't say it fills me with joy, but I have emailed the proposed essay title to the New Tech lecturer. and today is about having a reccy of it all before I start :-/
