I hadn't realised that Kate Bush's album The Sensual World was inspired by Ulysses - specifically 'Penelope'.  You learn something new every day.

I have switched reading the copy that Plymouth Uni gave me and have started to read one that has a better font size.

Later
I am quite pleased as I have started to gut out the framework of the 3 main chapters that deal with sexuality.  I am looking into the challenges of tradition in Roman Catholic Ireland.  The womens' roles etc.  Plus, reminding myself of the key concepts of modernism (which I glossed over a bit last time, it seems).  Still, 600 words - 20% done :-)

Below is a directo's cut video of The Sensual World, called 'Flower of the Mountain.'

OK Mr Fry - I am dreaming about you again.  Always on a bus too.  Admittedly, this business of not having my own car is getting to me and Jungianists would say that this would represent my lack of motivation.  As a well-known Oxford grad, it is not therefore unusual to have this man as influence in my dream - however, also with Kate Bush's music.  He did a voice over for 50 words For Snow but not Joanni which is the music I heard in my dream last night.

How strange.  Pleasant but strange. For the record, I bear no resemblance to Joan of Ark (the 'Joanni' of Kate's song), nor the celebrities mentioned.

Last night, I dreamt of Stephen Fry. Now, he is a person who can leave you feeling devasted by his eloquence or annoyed by his ubiquitousness - I fall into the former camp.  In this dream, we were on a bus together, circling a whitewashed council estate.  We were talking about the sounds of language, specifically talking about the German language which is strange - especially since IRL, I want to learn Italian. Heaven knows why.  I then remember his spoken piece on Kate Bush's '50 Words For Snow.' I think he has an amazing voice; Alan Rickman runs a close second.

Seems weird to hear that song when it has been one of the warmest days this year.

Saying that, I just love the sounds and patterns of language.  It was specifically the words 'Blackbird Braille' that I heard - wonder what it all means?

Wave after wave, each mightier than the last
Till last, a ninth one, gathering half the deep
And full of voices, slowly rose and plunged
Roaring, and the all the wave was in a flame.

People may recognise this as part of the poem The Coming of Arthur by Alfred Lord Tennyson.  It is also on the Kate Bush track The Ninth Wave (Hounds of Love album).  As part of Kate's recent tour, these bits of confetti cascaded onto the audience and duly collected by her fans.  I was lucky that my friend Di was there and managed to get a few, one of which she gave to me.  It is infinitely precious and I am blessed with an amazing friend - thank you Di Andrews xxx

At long last, Kate Bush re-emerges from her country life and not only brings forth a new album, but a rare tour too.  It has been rated as a spell-binding operatic performance and has amazed and cheered her fans in equal measure.  The debut last night rocked the Hammersmith Apollo and rave reviews have been hitting the headlines for the past 24 hours.

I was very definitely a fan, enjoyed many of her older hits such as Army Dreamers, Sat in Your Lap and the fantastic Running Up That Hill.  Now, she has released many wonderful albums with incredible tracks (notably King of the Mountain and Pi on the Aerial album and the glorious 50 Words For Snow, voiced by Stephen Fry); my favourite piece of music by far is The Ninth Wave found on the B Side of the Hounds of Love album.  It gave me such a rich vein of creativity to tap into. I painted, drew, modeled craft clay and wrote a lot listening to this over 25 years ago. If you have never listened to it, please do so - it is thirty minutes of stunning music.

I am so pleased that she has found the courage to perform again.  I think she is such a talented performer and it is great to hear her music, both old hits and present day.  It is rare to find people who are such gifted all-round artists and I look forward to hearing more of her stuff in the near future.  A friend of mine was lucky enough to get a ticket to one of her performances next week and even though she will not be taking any photos/film, she has promised to tell me all when she returns.

Squeee!!! Welcome back, Kate Bush :-)
