Cornwall and Devon were effectively cut off from all other rail networks because of the storm damage.  At 0:30 seconds, you can tell how bad the storms continued to be.  Watching the work of the dedicated men restoring the line is truly humbling.  Thanks Guys :-)

Today I went to Penzance briefly and I took some pix of the Prom (which was well publicised as being absolutely trashed by the storms last month).  It is looking better - they have cleared up/shored up the things that were important.  It remains to be seen as to how much the government will fork out, though.

Jane Eyre/Feminist Theory - Day Hate

I have shaved off a mere 300 words, leaving me with 2,615 - I have to lose at least another 400 words, maybe more.  re academic sprinkles - I am a bit low on them. LION doesn't work for me at home, so I have used one English Review quote and will have to plunge into Gilbert and Gubar tomorrow. Tonight will be about really tithing the essay. Also, I have to whistle up a sonnet or two for the forum.  Finding this all a bit tedious to be honest :-/

20:03
Added the sprinkles and it is standing at 2,567.  Thing is - can I lose another 500 or so by nightfall?  Just had a phone call from lecturer, who has asked me to attend a meeting as a student representative. I said that I would, but it will be at the expense of the sonnet/forum.  Request granted - Yay!

2,187 - I have done it!

This is one of the trees on our local wood that came down.  For scale, Prodigal 2 (son in picture) is 6ft 1in tall.  I think it took out a couple of other minor trees in the wood, as the tree is (or rather was) massive.  It is so sad to see it prone like this.

More high gales, trees down and our local train station is now a dock, it seems :-/

More will follow if there are any more posted on Face Book.

Relentless storms are due to a far more southerly jet stream, so we are told. We have yet another bout of horrendous weather, mostly comprised of hail, thunder, torrential rain like you have never seen and fierce gales. We have been reassured by the Met Office that things should die down next week - I do not share their conviction. We have one day of calm, followed by 36 hours of apocalyptic chaos.  The Brits as usual, are stoic in the clearing up process, but understandably they are angry that they are governed by a failing succession of bureaucratic bullshit.

The thing is, the UK Government has not coped well. They spend more times in meetings discussing the way forward, rather than action.Tied up by red tape, hamstrung by quango bumph - in the middle of it is David Cameron, who has only sprung into action when the Home Counties flooded. Suddenly, money appears to be no object. No one can be blamed for the glut of storms we have faced, but the inability of our government getting it's finger out, is frankly quite shocking.

It's official - there is now no longer a railway track into Cornwall. Line washed away at Dawlish two days ago, now a landslide at Crewkerne. High tide about midnight tonight - remains to be seen as to what will happen. Fingers crossed etc.that the weather system changes and the destruction reduced. Attention is on Looe, Mullion, Penzance. The Somerset levels are affected again, plus the Thames has burst its banks at Chertsey (Surrey) again.

Dawlish Railway line - pathway to Cornwall - http://www.exeterexpressandecho.co.uk/Picture-Strom-damage

Many people from the UK would have seen this on the news last night.  Most of the attention (quite rightly) has been given to the ongoing plight in the Somerset levels - however Devon and Cornwall's battering over the last couple of days has seen events have a dramatic twist.  It has been well documented about the sea rolling into the shops of St Ives and tearing sizable chunks out of Newlyn Green - now this is serious.

Above is part of the mainline route to Cornwall - Dawlish in Devon.  I have taken the route many times and the outstanding feature of this beach is the dramatic brick-red sand.  Now it is the devastation of the whole track, which is now partly suspended in mid air.  Many trains are cancelled, some rerouted and other lines are closed because the aggregate has washed the ground underneath the track.  There aren't enough emergency coaches put on to cover this, so Cornwall is stuck at the moment.  It is estimated that this storm alone will cost Cornwall £10 million pound ( just over $16 million USD), with more weather to hit us at the weekend.

Under the cut, there are more photos of my area (18 miles from Lands End).

80 mph winds off Sennen Cove, 93 mph recorded in the Isles of Scilly. Parts of the village have trees and power lines are down. We had a hailstorm about half an hour ago and it has gone very quite out there. Not sure what the tidal conditions are like. Don't think I will be going to Uni tomorrow. Will post as and when.

20:37
105 mph gusts on the Isles of Scilly, trees down at Truro, Penzance and St Ives. Parts of the country are without electric. it has gone eerily quiet for now, possibly because we are in the eye of the storm.  Have had a text from a friend, who tells me it is bad in Plymouth now.

21:48
Gusts are back and I think we are in for a bumpy night - temporarily, we have electric, so friends are round to charge iPads/phones etc.

I know talking about the weather is a very 'Brit thing' to do - I myself have moaned about the weather a LOT this winter, as well documented over the past few entries. Even so - I am a bit worried now.  I live more or less under that black spot in the middle of the map and am used to gales, but the ones coming up are likely to be like the ferocious ones from my childhood.  You don't worry merely about the bin going walkies; you worry about the entire roof taking off. We have had some of the ceiling collapse in the past and one year, one of our chimney pots came crashing through the kitchen roof.

Sometimes they get the forecast wrong and it skims over the top of us and dumps its load on the poor people on the Somerset levels.  As we speak, it is getting hairy out there already and the storm isn't due for at least another 12-18 hours.  I just hope that St Ives/Penzance can stand the force; the latter had problems running yesterday as the sea had washed away some oft the crucial aggregate to keep the railway track in place.  It seems that Blighty is in for a right old battering over the next few weeks - time to keep your head down and hope for the best :-/
