I feel like I have been compiling and researching this forever - this has only been protracted because of unforseen circumstances.  I have written about 1,400 words or so with a good 800 to follow and I am about a thrid the way through the PP.  it kinda all went to the wall when Hubby was diagnosed then had his stint in the hospital.

Today, I want to discuss his artistic style first seen in The Stalk of the Celery Monster and his artwork in The Melancholy Death of Oyster Boy/Stain Boy.

Well, I scratched that idea for now and rearranged a lot of stuff.  Will be looking at Sleepy Hollow and Alice in Wonderland again, also considering Sweeney Todd - but not too fond of the latter.  I wasn't entirely convinced of the chemistry between Depp and Bonham Carter to be honest.

I have spent the day watching three Burton films back to back - 'Corpse Bride,' 'Frankenweenie' (2012 animated version) and 'Sleepy Hollow.' Think I have some themes I can work with now.

I had a better day yesterday than expected, but today I am really dragging my ass.  I think that I have sussed how I am going to write the essay - style/theme/camera angles/cast & crew, concentrating on first the animations then the live action films.  It is very tempting to try to do this all in timeline order.

Spent the previous day away as I had to attend meetings and see important people.  I had spent the last day watching Edward Scissorhands and today I am watching Vincent and some of The Nightmare Before Christmas to understand Burton's stylistic approach. More later.

This is one 'Messay Essay' - 1,200 words partly plan, part observation.  Some structure but mostly very loosely connected.  My concentration levels are zero, mainly because of added burdens. Onward, I suppose - I want to see SOME progress.  It doesn't help that I am trying to craft a Burton PP alongside.  i would do it separately, but in forming the PP, it is actually helping me direct the essay.

19:56
I do actually feel like I have made some headway.  A LOT of reaaranging and consequential rewriting.  I had a cunning plan, then had to restructure it again - hence the mess.  I think I might be calling it a day soon.  Dinner beckons and I don't think I will be inclined to tie myself to the desk until late.

I will be spending the day away from the computer as I want to read, extensively take notes and rewatch Burton's films to identify the mise en scene links - probably from 2 animations (The Nightmare Before Christmas/Corpse Bride) and then 3 live films (Beetlejuice/Edward Scissorhands/Sleepy Hollow). I also have to think of other art projects he has done, such as the 1997 book The Melancholy Death of Oyster Boy/Stain Boy.

I haven't written for a while, for personal reasons - but find that I have to plod on with my projects.  I use this diary to chart my progress, plus it does stop me feeling totally alienated from the outside world. I am hoping my projects will take my mind off of things and I suppose the escapist world of Tim Burton is a good a place as any.  I did start some of this off just before Christmas, but was derailed somewhat.

Anyway, I have started the 2,000 word seminar paper and have also begun the PP - collecting TB pix and trying to line up the texts and the pictures together so there is some consistant flow.  Part of me thinks I should be going to the cinema to see Big Eyes, especially since it is sans Johnny Depp (which is unusual) and Helena Bonham Carter (which is messy). I find the latter a shame as I like Bonham Carter, he seem to do a lot of excellent work with her.

17:45
I find doing the PP easier at the moment, plus it is helping me direct my essay.  I am using his stylistic influence to prove his impact as an auteur.

I have chosen Tim Burton as autuer for my subject in the Contextual Study of Film module.  I have already got Big Fish, Corpse Bride, Nightmare Before Christmas, Big Fish and Alice in Wonderland, but have had to order Batman, Batman Returns, Frankenweenie, Ed Wood, Mars Attacks! Edward Scissorhands and Beetlejuice. Although I have seen all of these films, I need to throw myself in the deep end and really study the symbols and themes of his work more closely.  I can see where he is influenced by Dr Seuss' characters and how his time spent with Disney paid off. I think I will be thoroughly glued to the box come Reading Week at the end of October.

Vertigo

Yesterday we watched Vertigo, the famous Hitchcock movie. It has been hailed as 'The Best Movie of All Time', which has had modern day movie critics arguing the case that there are better films from the present day.  It is interesting to experience Hitchcock as the 'auteur' and it could be argued that his wife Alma had a lot to do with this too. Vertigo itself is quite an amazing film, but I think it is about how the film has been a conduit for other people, specifically film producers like Truffaut and Tarantino.

I hesitate to write too much about Hitchcock's preference of blondes as leading ladies, the obsessional qualities of his leading men or the voyeuristic content of all of his films, but he cuts an interesting (if expansive) figure.

Yesterday, we started Contextual Study of Film, which included concentrating on auteur theory and watching Hitcock's Vertigo for an hour.  The above clip was from Singing in the Rain and the sequence was choreographed by Gene Kelly - who is seen more as an auteur, rather than plainly just an actor/dancer.  MGM began by producing musicals and obviously this is a classic.  Not so impressed with New Tech at the moment.  I am used to Windows and had to contented with finding my ass with both hands way round a Mac.  Confusing.  Plus we had to look at a new Blog forum called Padlet and I found it fiddly to use (but I have since figured it maybe a problem because I am using a mac - does not seem to be so much of a problem at home).  I have been looking at the old Year 2 Blogs and they seem to have been using Blogspot - I may have to raise my old account from the dead.

Sorted the Student Ambassador paperwork out and it seems that the cross peer mentoring will start in October as I might be accompanying 1st year FdA Students on a trip to the Mothership (Plymouth Uni), plus I may sign up to the Open Evenings at Penwith as well as Truro. I am trying not to think about it too much at the moment - that way, I won't panic but will attend if put on the spot.
